I am a retired engineer and now have the time to indulge my passion for painting
and combine it with my life-long interests in motorsport and all forms of transport
by land, sea and air.
My training was with the British Aircraft Corporation based at Filton, Bristol and
my early career was spent on Concorde design - hence the preponderance of Bristol
aircraft in my aviation paintings Similarly my marine paintings are largely connected
with the Bristol Channel area and especially the famous P&A Campbell’s White Funnel
Fleet of paddle steamers.
However my greatest passion is for motor racing, especially on the classic road circuits
of Europe in the days before modern commercialism took control.
I paint exclusively in oils; I have tried watercolour and acrylics but have found
that oils give greater flexibility and both greater intensity and subtlety of colour
than the other mediums. All my work is well researched, backed up by my own extensive
reference library, but although I always strive for technical accuracy I am just
as interested with achieving a sense of time and place.
I am especially concerned for the subject to ‘sit’ correctly - whether it is a ship
heeling to the wind, a car cornering at speed, an aircraft banking or the weight
of a locomotive on the rails.
In my motor racing paintings I have been trying to achieve a sense of speed whilst
still achieving a clearly recognisable image of the cars - I will leave it to you
to judge whether I have succeeded.
